Abstract
Occupational Therapy (OT) in cancer care is an emerging field of practice that can increase quality of life, reduce recovery time, and decrease symptoms from cancer treatment and surgery. Specifically in mastectomy care, an occupational therapy practitioner's (OTP) role is underutilized due to lack of knowledge, awareness, and realization of services OT provides. Patients report their needs being unmet, lacking coping strategies, and feeling stress and fear from their cancer journey. Addressing patients' needs starts with the physicians and their healthcare team. To combat this, the study will look at the effectiveness of educating physicians and healthcare workers on the benefits of OT in mastectomy care. The education will be delivered using an educational, evidence-based presentation and handout, followed by a survey to determine effectiveness. The purpose of this Doctoral Capstone Experience is to widen and recognize OT's role in cancer care, specifically for patients undergoing a mastectomy. This project details the implementation of education and educational resources for OT's role in mastectomy care.
