Abstract
In the United States (US), and many other countries around the world, problematic alcohol use is a significant public health concern, especially among young men. While it would be hard to capture the scope of the physical and mental benefits to reducing problematic alcohol use among men, it is likely to be very high. This study aims to add to the understanding of why the most at-risk group for problematic alcohol use on college campuses is also the most resistant to treatment efforts. In total 377 males participated in the online survey. This study found that adherence to several norms associated with stereotypical masculinity were consistently predictive of both motivation to change and outcome expectancies. Further, alcohol use mediated the relationship between masculinity and both motivation to change behavior and outcome expectancies.
