Abstract

"Aims and objectives: This research will focus its attention upon achieving a coupling of mixing dynamics and microbial kinetics with the help of models that represent the mixing behavior in stirred bioreactors. These models should specifically permit considerations of fed-batch as well as continuous modes of reactor operation. In the context of growth of bakers' yeast upon glucose, the effect of the following parameters upon the observed yields and productivities will be investigated. (a) The rate of supply of sugar. (b) The concentration of sugar in the feed stream. (c) The parameters of mixing model (to be discussed in subsequent chapters). The aim is not only to demonstrate how such a coupling can be achieved, but also to identify the crucial ranges of the mixing parameters."--Page 4.
