Abstract
There is no longer any question that wrongful convictions for serious criminal offenses can occur. Indeed, some such cases have been unearthed by enterprising journalists. Though uncovering injustice after it has occurred has value, a perhaps more intriguing question arises: What, if anything, can -- or should -- reporters do to prevent miscarriages of justice? This article explores how working journalists on the criminal justice beat view their duties in this regard, as well as the constraints they face in playing their roles as watchdogs.
