Abstract

Chronic pain is a complex and pervasive health issue that affects 21 percent of U.S. adults, creating an economic burden exceeding $918 billion annually. The societal impact extends beyond medical expenses, including indirect costs such as lost productivity and the stigma faced by those suffering from chronic pain. Chronic pain is associated with and exacerbated by various comorbidities and health determinants that healthcare providers and occupational therapy practitioners should recognize and address. This widespread condition requires a multifaceted approach, shifting focus towards empowering clients to actively participate in their care rather than relying on passive, symptom-focused treatment strategies. This doctoral capstone project aims to enhance the skills of occupational therapy practitioners in treating chronic pain within an outpatient and hand therapy context. The project developed and integrated evidence-based resources to supplement standard occupational therapy care and improve proficiency in assessing and managing chronic pain. This project addresses gaps identified in occupational therapy education and practice regarding chronic pain management, focusing on implementing occupation-based, cognitive, and psychosocial strategies to enhance clients' occupational performance, mental health, and well-being.
