Abstract

Three Images of the Vicissitude of Weather is a piece for chamber orchestra and consists with three movements (Darkness Before a Storm, The Chaos, and One Fine Morning) by describing images of changing weather. The piece was inspired by the letter from Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo. In his letter, after the terrible winter goes by, the glorious spring is coming. No matter how painful and harsh the torment, soon this shall also come to pass and everything will be fine in the end. It is always a long journey to greet a hope. The first movement “Darkness Before a Storm” represents an image of a gloomy and moody evening before a severe rainstorm or snowstorm occurs, by using dissonance, yet still with various textures created by static and long phrases in the strings with little melodic passages in the winds. The second movement “The Chaos” is the climatic part of the piece that depicts unstable and hazardous weather condition with continuously moving passages and clusters. A moment of the upcoming bright and glorious morning is described in the last movement of the piece, One Fine Morning.
