Abstract
Mission statements have become an important tool used across all sectors of business and education (Alegre et al., 2018), and research on this particular tool has been thoroughly conducted as well. This qualitative study examined a particular sub-sector within education, high school athletics. By examining the experiences of athletic directors throughout the state of Missouri, this researcher sought to determine the phenomenon revolving around high school athletic mission statements. Findings indicated positive responses for athletic directors who possessed an athletic mission statement and responses that athletic mission statements are unnecessary from some athletic directors who did not possess the tool. The study presented recommendations focused on determining if an athletic mission statement would be purposeful, the creation of an athletic mission statement, and carrying out the mission statement within the athletic department.
