Abstract
Nurses are at high risk for experiencing stress during their careers, and pediatric nurses may experience even higher levels of stress because they care for the patient and the family. Promoting the health and wellbeing of frontline pediatric nurses by reducing stress should be a priority for health care systems. Stress may be managed in part by implementing mindfulness meditation and employing mindfulness meditation utilizing a smartphone mobile application has been gaining popularity due to the physiological and psychological benefits. The purpose of this evidence-based, quasi-experimental, quality improvement project was to implement the use of a mindfulness meditation smartphone application to decrease stress in pediatric nurses over eight weeks at a pediatric hospital in the Midwest. Twenty-four participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Participants completed a pre-intervention perceived stress scale and were encouraged to complete a ten-minute mobile app-guided mindfulness meditation session three days a week for eight weeks. After the eight weeks, four participants completed the post-intervention perceived stress scale, and no difference was found in the perceived stress scale scores. The project assisted the chief nursing officer with a free and easily accessible tool that may lead to a reduction in stress in pediatric nurses. Addressing stress via a mobile mindfulness meditation smartphone application may play a role in decreasing stress and positively impacting healthcare and the mental health of nurses.
