Abstract

"Elijah is a straight-forward, pictoral choral work of large scope. The genre of music ranges from solo recitatives, ariosos and arias to duets, trios, quartets and double quartets; from unaccompanied chorales to extended choral movements which include fugal writing and sonorous choral passages. The compositional style of Mendelssohn is said to be exemplified best in this single work; for in no other piece can the sincerity, profundity and melodiousness be found in such abundance. His skills are highly polished and the music is superbly idiomatic for voices. It is not surprising that Elijah has stood as a favorite choral work of singers and listeners the world over for more than a century."--Program notes.
