Abstract
This project, a full-length play, intends to illuminate the facts surrounding the architectural collapse at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in July 1981, when two bridges in the hotel lobby called skywalks collapsed, killing 114 people and injuring 216. Set in Kansas City in the four-week period immediately following the collapse, this play follows an ambitious local TV news reporter, as she uncovers the aftermath of the collapse and its impact on the people around her. Historical research relied on a variety of sources and was integrated into the storytelling and dramatic structure. The play asks questions about choices, career, trends in American media and culture, and what it means to find one’s purpose in the presence of death.
