Abstract

Despite the fact that eating disorders and other eating and/or body related issues are complex and nuanced, photojournalism coverage of the subject has not typically been fully representative of the issue and has perpetuated harmful tropes and stereotypes. This project analyzes the visual representation of eating disorders and related eating and body issues within the dance community, specifically, through subject feedback on a photo project about four dancers in mid-Missouri who are healing from eating disorders, body image disturbance, and/or disordered eating. Through two rounds of semi-structured photo elicitation interviews, the subjects' perceptions about how their personal experiences, the issue, and the dance community are being represented are analyzed through the lens of representation theory, as a means of recognizing potential misrepresentations, perpetuated stereotypes, and gaps in coverage.
