Abstract

Pre-operative analgesic education and interventions using therapeutic suggestions have shown efficacy in reduction of pain and opioid use, but few studies have looked at a combination of both strategies, and little consensus exists about what information to include in educational interventions and how to deliver them. This study explored the feasibility of implementation and acceptability of a written, electronically delivered preoperative analgesia educational intervention that combines what is known about benefits of preoperative education and therapeutic suggestions for patients undergoing endometriosis resection. Twenty-one participants undergoing ambulatory endometriosis resection were enrolled and ten (n=10) completed questionnaires two days preoperatively and on postoperative days 1, 4, and 7. Preliminary outcomes comparing preoperative and postoperative pain intensity, recovery score, and analgesia use were also explored. Results indicate the data collection and implementation was feasible and the intervention was helpful and positively viewed by participants who completed all portions of the study. The intervention group used more non-opioid analgesics and fewer opioid analgesics for postoperative pain management compared to those who did not receive the intervention. However, recruitment was challenging and with the small number of subjects (4 subjects received intervention and 6 did not), statistically significant preliminary intervention effects on postoperative use of opioids, non-opioids, pain intensity, and recovery were not obtained. Future studies should test the intervention with a larger sample size.
