Abstract
"Many people have already built earth-contact homes without knowing the actual surrounding soil temperatures. The commonly held assumption is, in central latitudes, at depths of 3 to 6 feet and beyond, the earth temperature holds at about 50 to 55 degrees. This is not true, and is certainly not true for earth in contact with a structure kept at an inside comfort temperature in the range of 65 to 70 degrees. The temperature of soil surrounding most of the structure will be higher than the assumed 50 to 55 degrees range, requiring a year or more to read a steady, higher value."--First page.
