Abstract
"What is appropriate concert-fare for an academic festival? For the performance of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the founding of the University of Missouri at Columbia, Maestro Leonard Slatkin has chosen wisely. He has selected music of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) and William Schuman (born 1910). With these choices, both the "good old days" and modern times are well represented. An appreciation for the importance of the European legacy to American university life as well as for the vitality of intellectual and artistic pursuits displayed for generations at American institutions of higher learning may also be read into such a program for such an occasion."--Program Notes.
