Abstract
The stories in this collection explore family and friendships. They follow characters for whom the world is not always a perfect fit, fierce in its beauty and its sadness, characters whose best intentions too often fall short. Several of the stories take on the perspectives of children or adolescents, illuminating that which is childlike and human in all of us, regardless of age. Others navigate the experience of the elderly, with trials still raw and poignant. Many of the stories are in some way concerned with how people are shaped by place--whether in an imagined seaside village or in the rural Midwest. And some stories traverse the line between invented and physical worlds, and the way imagination and memory affect our realities.
