Abstract

Nonprofit newsrooms have become a larger part of the news ecosystem and commonly claim to challenge stereotypes or cater to new audiences (Usher, 2021, 2023; McLellan et al., 2022). This study examines how these startups may or may not defy dominant journalistic norms to do justice by marginalized groups. Using the framework of solidarity journalism (Varma 2020, 2021d, 2022, 2023), this study applies qualitative textual analysis and interviews to evaluate the normative qualities of housing coverage from a regional nonprofit news organization with two local newsrooms. The research found that solidarity reporting in a local nonprofit newsroom is shaped by organizational structures, by journalists' consideration of marginalized groups as both sources and audiences, and by the ways journalists frame structural conditions.
