Abstract
There are currently no self-report scales that measure self-determined motivation in online learners that were designed specifically for the context of online university courses. Assessing online learner motivation is a critical step in crafting motivational interventions that can increase engagement, improve academic outcomes, and boost retention. This study sought to create a scale using qualitative and quantitative development practices that measures online learners' sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness through the experiences of faculty-student connection, sense of belonging, and clarity of structure. The three-factor hypothesized model was unable to fit the data in usable ways. A data-informed two-factor model, however, was able to model relatedness and competence with online learners with a high degree of reliability. Results of this study can be used to help build better measures of online motivation.
