Abstract
Poppy has undergone numerous revisions which are reflected in the changes in title this work has experienced. Originally titled Sama Sam, meaning “I am alone” in Croatian, this script began as a story about a Croatian sheep farmer, whose inability to let go of the past left her isolated. It then became Cijena Rata, a piece with emphasis placed on Croatia, its history and the way that idealizing the past can be destructive to the future. The script underwent further revisions, a series of concessions that worked to make the piece more easily accessible and understandable. Most of this work happened under the title of Cost of War. While I was confident from the beginning that I did not want this to be a wartime piece, nor a work that glorified military feats, I did know that I wanted to examine the residual impact of military conflict on the generation directly following war. Looking at how generational trauma informs our understanding of ourselves, and others is a piece that has remained through the revision process. In its current iteration, Poppy is less focused on the reverberating and subsequent loss that results from military conflict, and is more focused on the bonds that can form when choosing to confront reality and finding a balance between respecting and preserving an accurate history, while choosing to live meaningfully in the moment.
