Abstract

On March 13, 2020, the entire trajectory of higher education changed for millions of students across the United States and worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Colleges and universities navigated the social, political, and economic challenges of welcoming students back to campus under mitigation efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in a new normal. This research provides narrative accounts of students who started college between August 2020 - August 2021 as first-time, full-time students at a small private liberal arts college in the Midwest United States to explore how social distancing, mask wearing, and virtual learning affected students ability to find belonging. Student accounts support years of research highlighting the importance of finding a sense of belonging and the adverse outcomes mitigation measures meant to keep college students healthy and safe can have on creating communities and connections with other students.
