Abstract

The project seeks to expand the conversation about the meaning of documentary-making and the role of collaboration in its practice. The study analyzes five independently made documentaries that employ collaboration in production. Through in-depth interviews with documentary directors and participants, using grounded theory, the study defines the concept of collaboration and outlines how it can be implemented in documentary-making. Based on the collected information, collaboration in a documentary can be defined as a state of mind that recognizes the participants' control over their narrative in the film. It is a form of collaboration where the film director(s) and the participant(s) work together towards a common goal. In this form of collaboration, filmmakers involve participants in the decision-making process and respect their boundaries, while participants agree to be part of the world created in the editing room and informed by the filmmaker's vision. The study suggests that building trust and clear communication are the key factors for successful collaboration. If implemented successfully, collaboration allows both the film directors and participants to push the boundaries of documentaries and look for new ways to create meaning, potentially making the documentary-making practice more inclusive and ethical.
