Abstract

This review explores the impact of adverse experiences on child development and the crucial role of occupational therapy in supporting foster families. With over 400,000 children in U.S. foster care facing increased risks of trauma, the needs of these children and their foster families are significant (Lietz et al., 2016; Stewart et al., 2023). This capstone experience is a needs assessment conducted at Coyote Hill, a non-profit organization in Missouri, highlighting both strengths and challenges foster families face in daily activities. Key strengths include community support and effective routines, while challenges involve advocacy for education, time management, and managing difficult behaviors. The findings underscore the need for holistic, integrated support systems and policy reforms to enhance the well-being and stability of foster families, ultimately enabling them to provide nurturing and stable homes for children in need.
