Abstract

The field of journalism often struggles with reliance on elite or authority sources, therefore undermining and overlooking the lived experiences of sources from the communities reporters cover. There is particular concern about this reliance on the environmental beat. Through semi-structured interviews with eight environmental journalists, this research examines how reporters on the beat value community sources, and how they cultivate and maintain relationships with those sources. This report finds that environmental journalists consider connection with community sources one of their primary responsibilities as a reporter. These journalists value community members as sources that hold them accountable and better their journalism. And in many cases, environmental journalists feel that working with community sources as partners is essential for the future of journalism. Additionally, this project offers a list of recommended best practices for environmental journalists looking to expand or improve their connections with community sources.
