Abstract

In the last decade, new technology opened the door for remote work, and the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the process. The combination of technology and the pandemic thus transformed the work office landscape. This paper explains how Uses and Gratifications Theory underpins the needs and gratifications that shape the choices people make surrounding remote work, with specific inquiry into the use and frequency of face-to-face communications and its alternatives to meet needs and gratify remote workers. Leaders of remote teams benefit from data that explores face-to-face communication so they can budget and plan accordingly. Using a qualitative method of six in-depth-interviews, this study examines the methods professionals use to prioritize face-to-face interaction along with the reasons behind their methodology. This study asks two driving questions; how does face-to-face communication help employees overcome the limitations created by a virtual work environment; what other strategies are most effective to overcome virtual work limitations when face-to-face communication is not available to employees?
