Abstract
This study examined current advanced orthodontic resident demographics and their association with factors residents’ rank as most important for residency program selection and future practice plans. A 10-question survey, approved by the UMKC IRB, was distributed to 1,413 current orthodontic residents via email through the American Association of Orthodontists Partners in Research program. The survey was divided into three domains including resident demographics, residency program demographics, and career preferences. Specifically, resident demographics included gender, race/ethnicity, and where they spent most of their childhood. The potential factors impacting residency program selection included program location, program length, cost of attendance, geographic diversity, opportunity for stipend/scholarship, and program proximity to family, partner/spouse preference. For future practice plans, the potential impacting factors included availability of position, finances, ownership opportunity, location, geographic diversity, proximity to family, and partner/spouse preference. Additionally, questions in the third domain gathered information regarding residents’ specific plans post-graduation from residency. To determine associations between resident demographics and all variables, Fisher’s Exact or Chi Square tests were utilized and significance for all testing was set at p ≤ 0.05. Region of upbringing was the only resident demographic significantly associated with a factor impacting residency program selection, specifically, program length. Gender was significantly associated with ownership opportunity being ranked most important for factors impacting future practice plans. Several resident demographics were significantly associated with future practice plans following graduation from residency. Overall, the results of this study suggest that some resident demographics, specifically race/ethnicity, gender, and region of upbringing, are associated with factors impacting residency program selection and future career plans.
