Abstract
Nature and scope of the project: Education concerning medical emergencies and complications for children with a pediatric oncology diagnosis is essential. This project’s objective s were a 20% increase in bedside nurse knowledge of the Know to Go (KTG) education guidelines and a 20% increase in patient education documented on the KTG guidelines. Synthesis and analysis of supporting literature: De la Maza et al. (2020), Di Giuseppe et al. (2020), and Rodgers et al. (2018) support the use of structured education and the use of an education checklist for newly diagnosed pediatric oncology patient education. Project implementation: A staff educational presentation on the KTG guidelines and creation of documentation job aid was completed in August 2023 to increase nurse knowledge and provide reminders to document this education. Evaluation criteria: A baseline nurse knowledge survey and chart review of education documentation was completed (T1), implementation of the intervention, and follow-up knowledge survey and chart review (T2). Outcomes: The primary objective of nurse knowledge increase of 20% was not met, with only a 12.1% increase in overall nurse knowledge. The pretest mean was 9.1 (SD = 2.33), and posttest mean of 10.2 (SD = 2.03). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a very large statistically significant increase in participants whose knowledge survey score changed to a higher value (p < .001, A = 12.9). The secondary objective was met with a 66.5% increase in documentation of KTG education. While not statistically significant, there was a small to moderate increase in KTG documentation by the bedside nurse from T1 (15.8%, n = 3) to T2 (26.3%, n = 5), p = .61, Φ = .2. There was a small to moderate decrease in patients with no documentation of KTG education from n = 5 (26.1%) in T1 to n = 3 (15.8%) at T2, p = .61, Φ = .2. Recommendations: Future projects would benefit by focusing on nurse barriers to providing education and families' perception of education provided. The job aid and RN education presentation produced from this QI project have been incorporated into the new RN onboarding education for the oncology unit.
