Abstract

This study is part of a larger ongoing line of inquiry to develop information useful in promoting the independence of elderly individuals in their homes. This study utilizes an artificial intelligence system to develop an accurate evaluation tool used to evaluate the homes of elderly individuals. The specific purpose of the current pilot test is to determine the accuracy at which ERHAP identifies inadequacies in the homes of elderly individuals. A sample of fifty elderly individuals 65 years of age and older participated in the study. The elderly household member was interviewed by the researcher using the ERHAP questionnaire. ERHAP simultaneously examines the functional capabilites of the elderly individual and the environment in which the elderly individual lives.
