"A Reflection of
Modern Campus Thought"

OFF THE EDITORIAL CHEST
We're calling this column "Off
the editorial Chest" because that's
just what it'll be-our random
thoughts on this or that. Some-
times we'll have a real bone to pick,
other times maybe we'll admit the
world is o. k. and we'll just dauble
along. But this issue we've got
something to say . . .
We don't know how many of
you saw Pat o'Brien in "Knute
Rockne" but it made us do a little
thinking. Particularly that scene
where Rockne, tired and discour-
aged returns from his first major
defeat. Expecting to face glum
faces and jeers he meets instead
a student pep rally, cheering the
defeated team and yelling for Old
Knute. "That's okay, Rock," the
enthusiastic undergrads yell,
"We'll take them next time." Well
to get to the point, that's the sort
of spirit we'd like to see around
Old Mizzou'. The other day down in
the office we were perusing some
old copies of Showme-back in the
old days when Missouri's football
team was a farce. The Showme
at that time reflecting then as it
does now "Modern Campus Thought"
put out an issue with a picture of
a banged up Tiger in football togs.
The whole tone of the cover was
sarcastic defeatism. Quite a bit of
water has passed under the pro-
verbial bridge since those unhappy
days. Today, thanks to a great team
and a lot of good luck, we've got a
football team that's turning out
the goods. And with it came, last
year, a revival pf that intangible
and-rare-for-Missouri-thing called
school spirit. As long as Pitchin'
Paul was passing our way to big-
ger and better victories aided and
abetted by a clicking team, we rode
the crest of the wave. Students
came to all the games and attend-
ed the pep rallies. Right now we've
still got a great team and a great
coach. But that certain something
we call school spirit seems to be
slipping again. It looks as though
it needs another shot in the arm.
There are a helluva lot of college
wise guys, jellies and super-cynics
knocking around here who think
school spirit is just so much rah-rah
bunkem-think it's Joe Collitch
stuff.
At the St. Louis game, which was
a grand victory and a brilliant dis-
play of football, there was but little
display of spirit on the part of the
students. Maybe it was the weath-
er, but when the band played "Old
Missouri" at the end of the game
not a handful of people stayed in
the stands to doff their hats and
sing. The trouble there, I expect.
was partly the indifference of the
older students and the indifference
of the boys and gals down in front
with the nice white sweaters. And
then the other day when the Tigers
came back from Pittsburg. Where
was the student body then? Only
Yehudi was down at the station.
How about that Chet? Then too,
some of the loyal sons of the Black
and Gold got together last year un-
der the direction of Bill Gill and
dug up a new pep song to supple-
ment the well worn "I'm a Son". Its
name is "Every True Son" and the
Jay Show used it. But I expect
somebody just forgot all about that
too.
Well we've let off a little steam.
I dunno whether it'll do any good
or not, but here's hopin'.

Pledges Pour Into 14
Once more the onus of judging the neophytes falls upon
the responsible shoulders of Showme. As in years past our
ace observers have invaded Greek privacy and looked with a
super critical eye upon the future B. M. and B. W. O. C.'s.
This year the system of judging is different-quite differ-
ent in fact. As you will note-if you haven't already turned
the page to scan Eta Beta Pi and see what you rated-we are
using song titles. The general idea is each pledge is supposed
to suggest the title of a popular song or versa visa. Maybe
you'll think some of these ratings are screwy, but so are
some of the pledges. Anyway take it all with a grin or two
of Sodium Chloride and Good Luck!

Tiger Tales . . *By Joe Finley
Ralph Carter, flashy sophomore back, leaps
into action. Our sports experts tell us this is
a boy to keep your eye on (if you can).
Coach Don Faurot was morose when the Uni-
versity of Missouri Tigers assembled to start
football practice this fall. He talked to newspap-
ermen and photographers about the prospects
for the coming campaign.
The Bengal mentor pointed to Paul Christman,
who some say is a whole football team in himself.
But there must be ends to catch Christman's
passes, and that was one of the Faurot worries.
But ends have never troubled Missouri too much.
They just seem to spring from oblivion each year
to make the Tiger flanks strong parts of the ma-
chine. Faurot also mentioned a weak punting sit-
uation. But the same thing was wrong lost year
when the Big Six champions-to-be assembled, and
Ronald King and Blaine Currence developed rap-
idly into two of the best booters in the Missouri
Valley.
But there was one serious thing that really wor-
ried Don Faurot. He seemed to startle the Fourth
Estaters and onlookers when he mentioned that
his reserve strength was weak, and that he was
seriously worried about it. There were not many
veterans from last' year's crack outfit left to car-
ry on.
Maybe Freshman Coach John "Hi" Simmons
could relieve Faurot's mind, but Hi only smiled
quietly and looked over toward the freshmen
field, where a new crop of green, willing young-
sters would soon be milling about in an attempt
to convince him they could play football. But
Hi Simmons knew of his last year's freshmen
crop-the Tiger sophomores of 1940. They are
the reserves on which Don Faurot will have to de-
pend.
The whole group of sophomores now .bids well
to be one of the best newcomer groups to arrive
on the Rollins Field practice turf since the halcyon
days of Gwinn Henry, back when Missouri was a
power in the old Missouri Valley Conference.
Bob Steuber, lanky end from St. Louis C. B. C.,
comes close to being the darling of the lot. Steu-
ber was picked as the regular left end as early
as last spring, and the tall speedster has already
justified that belief in him. Steuber is a sprint man
in track, and on the gridiron, he uses his speed
to great advantage in racing under those Christ-
man heaves. The enemy safeties also come in for
their share of the Steuber smash when they try
to run back Tiger kicks.
Steuber caught one pass in the Billiken gam2
and moved into the -end zone with an enemy
back hanging on his pants. His defensive work
was excellent, and already, they are beginning to
tag him for a potential All-Big Six wingman in
his sophomore year.
The tailback understudies to the great Christ-
man are also a likely looking group. Charles
"Bud" Hemmel, the first Jefferson City boy to
make the Tiger varsity in quite some time, and
Harry "Slippery" Ice are the lads who will fill in
for "Pitchin' Paul" this fall when Missouri's All-
American leaves the field. Hemmel is a deadly
passer, in fact, almost as good as Paul himself,
and Ice is perhaps the best running back on the
squad. Ice unreeled a 24 yqrd touchdown dash
against St. Louis, and was away for several other
good gains in the season's opener.
Starting jobs for sophomores on a champion-
ship team are always few, but jackrabbit wing-
back Ralph Carter of Springfield has already brok-
en into the select circle along with Steuber. Rabid
Tiger followers were rudely shocked when they
saw Carter's name in the opening array against
St. Louis U. in place of capable Jimmy Starmer,
but Faurot had been contemplating the move for
some time.
Carter is a kicker, and that one fact explains
his presence at the kickoff. The punting problem
is still a serious one ,but they are depending on
Carter to fill the bill. In addition, he is extremely
fast, and takes Christman's passes with all the
skill and agility of Starmer. His catch of one of
Paul's tosses in the Billiken game and twisting
touchdown run was done in cinema-palce style.
He ducked, twisted, slipped away from tacklers,
reversed his field, and then sprinted away from
them in the finest run of the day. Carter's pic-
ture was in this year's Football Annual as one of
the sophomore stars of 1940, and he is expected

I.M.A. . THROWS ONE
The election and politics in general came
in for a lot of ribbing at the I.M.A. "Political
Party" last Friday night. The gym was decorat-
ed with campaign material from all the political
parties, and gags in the manner of Hellzappoin
filled the program.
A kissometer rating the political ability of
prospective politicians at kissing an animted doll
borrowed from the Crown, six dummies repre-
senting the presidential candidated at which
guests could sling mud, a ring into which hats
were tossed featured the program. Big black
cigars were given to all the winners.
Leon Cordell, singer from Louisiana, Mo.,
formerly with the St. Louis Muny Opera made
his bow to campus activities with Charlie Fisk's
band.
Roosevelt won the button ballot held at
the dance, Willkie came in second and Earl
Browder third. The candidates caricatured by
members of I.M.A. were introduced.
Charlie Fisk presses the flesh 'neith the beaming
countenances of the Big Guns of the political
battle.
Professor Jesse Wrench stoops to conquer as 1. M. A. prexy Don Delaney, complete with seegar,

Showme Show
Before plunging into key-hole reports on what
the socially-minded guys and gals of this socially-
minded University have been doing, this column
has one semi-retraction to make: we very boldly
stated that Pi Phi Brickey Casey and Independent
Jim Small saw the preacher some two summers ago,
having received this info on good authority. Now
Comes a storm of protests from irked young Pi
Phis, who declare that sister Casey "never did no
such thing". Our informer still maintains his
ground very stoutly, and the issue remains more
or less open. We wonder . . . John Lobsiger, one

Kansas City with an advertising agency, and seems
to be pining for his constant companion of last
spring, Pat Shannon . . . his old buddie, lanky

cozy apartment . . . Marriage announcements

son, expected to be one of the mainstays of a
green basketball squad this year, has had his Sig

the Sigma Chi eternal and more recently the mass
meeting chairman, has decided (not voluntarily)
to go to camp with the National Guard in No-
vember . . . Owen Joggerst, state high school
100-yard dash champ, is seeing a lot of Pat
Campbell, Pi Phi pledge . . . and what goes on

Starmer we used to know way back when, has

Doctor Hindman
"Now Doctor?"
Tiger
Hotel
Meet Doctor
Hindman
by Arthur Rubin
"If I don't come back, tell
my mother I died happy!" Dr.
Darwin A. Hindman, new Direc-
tor of Student Affairs of men,
cried back to his secretary, as
we escorted him out of his office
to take his picture.
The Doctor is a mediumly built
man, with a personality as large
as his smile. When he smiles,
his teeth and eyes glisten with
a jewel-like lustre, and his whole
face sparkles as it falls into
crevices of glee. They sort of
draw you to him, and any awk-
wardness or embarrassment is
soon disintergrated by his warm-
ing smile.
Between draws on his pipe he
explained that there was to be
no revolution in the fraternity
system," - - - and it is too early
to make any changes at all in
anything, so things will glide
on as they did before."
Dr. Hindman, an expert fish-
erman and huntsman, came to
us from Ohio State five years
ago as Department Head in the
Physical Education Department.
He still holds this position.
The Doctor, during a recent
hunting and fishing trip to the
south, shot and killed a three
hundred fifty pound wild boar
with a bow and arrow! He threw
a ray like smile at us and ex-
plained, "It was extremely
dangerous, and I was lucky.
I am, however, more ardent a
fisherman than a hunter." And
he went back to his pipe. He also
explained that in the line of his
new duties, he has a job which
no one has ever held before him.
That beinq the supervisor of the
new Men's Dorm. He is also
supervisor of the entire Men's
Housing problem.
As we left him, we realized
that there was one of the few
real men that we have had the
good fortune to meet. He left
a most delicious taste in our
mouths, and like Oliver Twist,
we'll always want some more.

Youth is selfish. Because it needs so much.
The jelly joint danced on its foundations in
honor of registration eve. The proprietor, trad-
ing amber for silver, basked in the profitable
glow of the juke box which gleamed like a sun-
set on the Pacific. Bill, the waiter, like Gany-
medes tendering nectar to the gods, slipped and
slopped the suds on the sparking sitters and
spinning Astaires.
The students are back in their dives and
all's right with the world.
The door, as if it knew there was room for
one last customer, yawned greedily for Clarence
Waters.
To butt his way past the stags thumbing
through the telephone directory, slips into the
dark corner, and order a beer was for Clarence
the impetuous work of a moment.
I'm stepping out with a memory to-
night . .
His face twisted. Why, of all tunes, that
tune-tonight? This booth . . .
A couple danced by. "Where's Imogene
tonight?"
Thank God these people never stop to hear
your answer. Besides, what could I say? She
should be here with me.
His fingers nearly cracked the glass. And
whose fault is it? Not mine. All summer long
I greased that twenty-four hour hamburger griddle
with the sweat of my brow. We were to have
our happiest year. I was going to make that
pin really mean something-with a ring.
"That breeze and I are saying with a sigh
That you no longer care . . "
And what did I find waiting for me - a
cold letter. She didn't think she wanted to come
back here to school.
"The breeze and I are whispering Good-bye
to dreams we used to share . . "
Imogene's roommate detached herself from
the swirling mass of couples. Sympathy.
"It's tough, Clarence. I think I know how
you feel. I can't imagine why she changed
schools."
He turned and stared unseeingly at her
saddle shoes.
"Yes, Arkansas State Teachers College."
And all about me, they know you have
departed without me.
And we wonder why . . . "
Everyone expected to see us together. And
everyone will ask. Helping me to remember!
But I won't remember! I'll forget! I'll for-
get some way.
I'll study night and day. No! I'll travel.
No. I'll enlist . . . But that would be useless.
The lights grew dimmer as the smoke thick-
ened. He shrank further into his booth. The
crowd made a jitterbug of the Coco-Cola girl
on the wall.
Ganymedes eyed his empty goblet profes-
sionally. Ticking off another of the dwindling
string of dimes from the table, he set down
another amber potion.
Clarence tossed the stuff down in one gulp.
"Too bad this isn't cyqnide."
"Sorry, buddy. You'll have to get that
from the Coronet. 0000."
He thinks I'm joking. Am I? It WOULD
be so easy.
No. That's the coward's way.
But what choice have I? Poison, enlist,
travel, lose myself i nwork? Or else . . . maybe
Yes . . . Yes. . No! Not that!
The first? I could take it here. And beer
for a chaser.
It narrows down to two. fates. Poison or
. . . the other. I must decide sometime. I've
got to decide now!
Christ! What's the difference? I'll take
the first.
"Waiter! Save this booth and bring another
beer-a short one. You said 0000.
He lurched to his feet and pushed through
the dancers. Blindly he found the telephone.
0000.
The busy signal thumped against his brain.
He killed the line with a viscious slap at the
receiver hook. A quiet hum rewarded his ear.
"The other then."
His finger slowly moved over the cold metal
of the dial.

ONE THING A JUNIOR Susie is afraid is that she might get caught with out having her green rib-
bon on. Susie Brown and Barbara Hitz got caught. The seniors made them empty Stephen's Lake
into a pitcher with a tin cup. Left to right, Marion Holen, Jo Jo Bailey, Susie Brown, Barbara Hitz,
and Penny Baker.
ONE OF THE STEPHEN'S Susies from Oregon got lonely so she hunted up another Susie from her
town and made her pin the green ribbon onto her hair. It's Juanita Cowgill being ribboned by Pat-
sy Palmer.

A pile of glowing ashes marked the finis of
dog days for Stephens juniors when the girls toss-
ed green hair ribbons into a roaring bonfire. Green
ribbons denoted "green Susies" and the burning
ceremony was marked with fun and feasting.
Pictures show Susies celebrating the tradition-
al day by pinning ribbons on forgetful juniors be-
fore the burning, munching barbequed sandwiches
and entertaining upperclassmen. One high spot
of the program, not shown above, was a softball
game which whepped appetites for supper.
The scene took place on the shores of the Steph-
ens Lake on Country Club grounds. Girls swim,
paddle and row on the lake in whose cooling wat-
ers no Mizzou male is allowed to dip an inquis-
itive toe.
Stephens Country Club provides outside diver-
sion for outdoor minded students who ride and
play on its spacious grounds.
SINCE THE JUNIORS had to put on some sort
of program during the burning of their green
ribbons, these three little Susies did a song and
dance number. From left to right are Mary Mc-
Crae, Hilda Moter, and Mary Lou Vaughn.
TAKING LIFE AND CHOW easy, these sit on the bank of the lake to enjoy their food. Billie Hall,
Sara White, Wynne Jordan, Elanor Bass, and Fay Covington.

Mismated trousers and jackets are
ideal for the classroom. The cocoa
brown, three - buttoned vertical
striped shetland jacket contrasts
with the dark trousers. A white shirt
and green foulard tie complete the
outfit. The shoes are crepe-soled.
The reversible box coat comes in
handy during the quick-changing
fall weather. For a sporty appear-
ance, a dark gray single-breasted
herringbone suit, striped oxford
shirt, broad striped tie, and black
wing tip shoes, are just the thing.

IN TRAINING
Stan Lee looked out of his window and sighed sadly. He
hoped the last contest would rush along, so that he could
break training and go out and enjoy himself as the rest of
the fellows in his classes were doing. At times he was sorry
he went out for the team. It wasn't so bad before he had be-
come the star of the team; he could sneak out once in a while
but now they watched him like a hawk. What was more, the
coach placed more restrictions on him than on any other
member of the team. His leg work was so valuable that they
were afraid to take any chances of his hurting them. For that
reason, he wasn't allowed to attend dances, even during the
early part of the evening. The coach wanted to have a special
car pick him up and deliver him to his classes, but Stan Lee
felt enough was enough and he put his foot down on that
suggestion-of course, he put it down lightly.
He was the only one on the squad to get his effectiveness
purely from foot work. At that, Stanley Lee thought perhaps
the coach wasn't over strict. A debator should be in the best
condition when he stood upon the platform to speak.

now. Let's see you hit that dummy
again. Don't try too hard. That's it!

Ow, that hurt! You've got the stuff,

Introducing , Showme's About Towner Barrie
Young . . . He doesn't like flowers . is
head over heels in love-with Showme . . . No
wonder his friends call him everything from a he-
demon to a blond confusion . . . one of these
self-made men who's worked his way up the edu-
cational ladder from the sixth grade . . . He
likes music . . . Has got a French Horn that's
likely to get blowed on any time on day or night
--on inspiration . . . The man is prejudiced-
says K. C. girls are the most beautiful . . . Be-
sides gererally staying up all night, he crawls
into his pajamas and into bed for a ten minute
nap before every seige of studying . . . He likes
popcorn and his pet peeve is money . . He's
still recovering from being jilted by the Navy Air

to be a potent scoring threat throughout the sea-
son.
However, Faurot's big reserve problem lies
more in the line than in his veteran backfield,
and he looks to the sophomore forwards to spell
the lettermen throughout the campaign.
Vernon Lightfoot and Jeff Davis, the two Coffey-
ville boys who play tackle and center respectively,
and Mike Fitzgerald of St. Louis C. B. C., a stocky
guard, are the three leaders in the forward wall.
Fitzgerald is advancing at a rapid pace, and may
push some of the veterans from the starting line-
up before the season goes much farther.
The sophomores on the squad are Charles Be-
attie, Ralph Carter, Jerry Davis, Bert Ekern, Don
Greenwood, Bud Hemmel, Bob Horton, and Harry
Ice, backs; Bob Steuber, C. A. Shelton, Jack List-
er, Delmar Jackson, and Bob Brenton, ends; El-
mer Aussieker, Edwin Creed, Vernon Lightfoot,
Ralph Metzinger, Ray Phelps, and Don Reece,
tackles; Jack Eckdahl, Mike Fitzgerald, Ted Lie-
big, Wayne McMillan, and Gordon Smith, guards;
and Jeff Davis, center.

Metro, one Warner Brother,
Mr. Paramount, RKO, to mention
only a few of the boys, am-
bled out of the preview cham-
bers a few days ago each with
his choice of the month. To
settle the dispute some wise guy
realized they'd all take the
Round Towners word. The com-
mittee appointed purchased a
still smoking copy of Showme.
This . . . is what they found.
Due to Asiatic conditions out
of my control, my pipeline to the
oracle at Delphi sometimes suf-
fers censorship. But you need-
n't worry, not even a perfect
censor could resist the laughing
report from Delphian sages on
"No Time For Comedy". James
Stewart and Rosalind Russell duo
lead in this sophisticated com-
edy; also rib-sabotaging the cen-
sor, another good team, that of
Charley Ruggles and Genevieve
Tobin. Story centers around tall
Jimmy from Minnesota, sudden-
ly famous as a playwright in N.
Y., double-trouble in the way of
a wife and a very fancy number
for "inspiration" . . . that's
enough to get you started think-
ing about "No Time for Com-
edy".
"The Ramparts We Watch"
comes in for praise too. Talking
18 months to make, this picture,
presenting a beautifully accurate
re-enactment of the American
people from 1914-1918, leaves
many a sober thought driven
home in its startTing, frighten-
ing parallel to today's impend-
ing situations. The "Middle-
town", the March of Time
choose to localize the story was
.New London, Connecticut. 1,400

ed in the film. Look for interest-
ing revival shots of Teddy, Hoov-

"Down Argentine Way", with

this month (Bluebird 10877).

that harmonious team, Nelson

What to Do!
. . Dancing In and Around Columbia. .

splitting I calls it! You remem-
ber that "solidarity", "Pennsyl-
vania 6-5000-well, turning over
a new leaf we discover that "Rug
Cutter's Swing" is it, and it is
good . One of Victors best this
month is "5 o'clock Whistle",
by Duke Ellington, so hot, so
lowdown, almost rubs its part
dirt style right into your pores.
A record that I believed in so
much I bought is this Har-
ry James number that Fiske has
adapted so well, "Feet Draggin
Blues" (Columbia 35227); the
companion piece to that is a
slow sweet Frank Sinatra rendi-
tion of "Here Comes the Night",
When you hear Charley play it,
open up your drums for that tops
tenor Weiss!
A swinger for this month re-
sults in the first release of Bun-
ny Berigans new seven piece out-
fit, it a Victor, titled "Ay Ay,-
etc". A rhythm special for you;
"Central Ave. Breakdown", on
Victor featuring Lionel Hampton
and King Cole with 4 pieces,
Cole and Hampton playing their
popular and spicy 2 finger style.
For your dancing pleasure we of-
fer "Practice Makes Perfect" by
Bob Chestor. His orchestra has
really got the stuff now-its on
Bluebird 10838 . . on the re-
verse a good sweet but soundly
arranged "sadage", "Don't let
it (love) get you down".

Count's little ork has really
got it again this year--and I
do mean that "sending" spir-
it. Notice a certain trumpet
player with flourishes a la both
James and Zig. Aside from the
old goodie, Gibbons-Beriganized
"I can't get started with you",
request their arrangements of
"Careless", "Coming On". And
that new tenor man, oh!
Down Deen's Golden way lis-
ten on weekends to the fine
"dance" and smooth swing of
Devilbis-Hetzler's combo. Ray
and Jack are a fine team, with
a fine team-reports are and I
report that it's a place to go and
a band to hear!
