Abstract
"As we know, design involves two aspects of engineering and scientific endeavor : the creative process of coming up with a proposed enbodiment of solutions and the analytical process of determining if the proposed solution is correct or rational [1]. Furthermore, optimal design means " making the most effective use of the design." The concept of shape optimization has received considerable attention in the solid and fluid mechanics areas [2] [3], but has not been widely considered as an everyday tool for mechanism synthesis. Shape optimization refers to altering the form of a design to best meet the design criteria while maintaining constraint feasibility. The problem can be considered to be one of merging a general geometric representation with analysis and nonlinear programming techniques. When viewed from this perspective the design and synthesis of cam-follower mechanisms can be classified as a shape optimization problem. The goal of the optimization is to produce the cam profile which best meets the designer's objective."--Page 1.
