Urban biodiversity and design 2024 : urban biodiversity and design for local communities
Abstract
Nature conservation is a growing trend in urban neighbourhoods. Stakeholder groups search for the help of scientists and professionals to organize resilient and biodiverse urban environments that fulfil a range of ecosystem services. However, translating and disseminating knowledge on successful policies, practices, and nature-based solutions between academics and practitioners is often lacking. The aim of the 2024 URBIO conference is to bring together scientists and academics, landscape architecture and planning practitioners, and community groups to co-produce what knowledge people need for the successful design and conservation of biodiversity in urban areas. The Urban Biodiversity and Design International Network (URBIO) is the network of academics, practitioners, and stakeholders focused on urban biodiversity and design. Established in 2008, it has 1150 members from 64 countries. URBIO has distinguished itself as a forum for all ecologists, providing conferences, workshops, webinars, and opportunities for ecologists from academic and non-academic settings to collaborate with each other and with design, planning, and government practitioners for effective conservation solutions in urban areas. The 8th Conference of the Urban Biodiversity and Design International Network (URBIO) with the theme ” Urban Biodiversity and Design for Local Communities,” is held at the University of Missouri from 24 to 26 June 2024. The conference was organised by University of Missouri, the conference organising committee: Prof. Charles Nilon (University of Missouri), Prof. Dr Maria Ignatieva (University of Western Australia), Prof. Myla Aronson (Rutgers University), Prof. Christine Brodsky (Pittsburg State University, and, with the participation of URBIO Board members. URBIO 2024 had 111 participants from 16 countries. These proceedings comprise 84 abstracts of oral presentations and 6 posters reviewed by the conference organizing committee.
