Abstract: In herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) discordant partners, condom use at every sexual encounter decreases serologic HSV-2 transmission. (SOR: B, based on a pooled analysis of 6 studies.) Daily valacyclovir use by an individual with symptomatic HSV-2 outbreaks reduces transmission to a seronegative partner. (SOR: B, based on 1 RCT.) Avoiding sexual intercourse during outbreaks does not prevent transmission between discordant partners. (SOR: C, based on the secondary analysis of 1 RCT.)
