What genetic or ethnic factors increase the risk of melanoma?

Red or blond hair color, blue eye color, fair skin phototype, the presence of freckling, and a first-degree relative with malignant melanoma are associated with an increased risk of melanoma. The incidence of melanoma is lower among Maori, Pacific, and Asian ethnicities compared with European populations in the same location.
