What is the optimal interval for checking liver function tests (LFTs) in patients taking statins?

Monitoring LFTs in asymptomatic patients taking statin medications is unlikely to provide clinical benefit, given the infrequency of statin-induced liver damage. New US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prescribing information for all statins recommends monitoring at baseline and when clinically indicated. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (ACC/AHA/NHLBI) guidelines recommend monitoring at baseline, 12 weeks, and then annually for all statins.
