What is the best basal insulin product for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus?

Long-acting insulin analogues (insulin glargine and insulin detemir) are no more effective than NPH insulin in producing clinically relevant reductions in HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, the rates of symptomatic and overall hypoglycemia are lower in patients treated with glargine or detemir. (SOR A, based on a systematic review.) Insulin glargine causes more weight gain detemir, but requires lower doses. (SOR: B, based on a single RCT.)
