When and how is induction permissible for women with a history of cesarean delivery?

In women with a prior cesarean delivery who desire a trial of labor, spontaneous labor is safest. Mechanical methods (such as a Foley catheter) or amniotomy and oxytocin appear to be the safest methods of induction when vaginal delivery is attempted. In observational studies, prostaglandin use is associated with an increased risk of uterine rupture in patients who have a prior uterine scar and should be avoided.
