Massage has no serious adverse effects and may provide short-term benefits for patients with subacute and chronic neck or low-back pain, especially when administered by experienced therapists in combination with education and exercises. (SOR: C, based on systematic reviews of heterogeneous studies and small RCTs.) Massage is associated with increased patient satisfaction but also higher cost.
