Factors shown to delay onset of lactation include maternal age greater-than or equal to 30 years, maternal body mass index (BMI) >25 kg/m2, birth weight >3,600 g, absence of nipple discomfort in the first 72 hours, and failing to breastfeed well in the first 24 hours (SOR: C, cohort study). Cigarette smoking was shown to decrease volume of pumped breast milk in mothers of hospitalized preterm infants (SOR: C, small cohort study).
