Although there have not been studies specifically in the elderly with osteopenia, vitamin D (when dosed around 800 IU daily) has been shown to reduce the risk of hip fracture and any nonvertebral fracture in persons 65 years of age or older (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs).
