Are there effective office-based interventions that promote breastfeeding? Bottom line: Providing dedicated breastfeeding support is more effective than usual care in increasing breastfeeding duration. Interventions utilizing peer support, prescheduled appointments, combined pre/postnatal elements, and face-to-face or web-based interactions produce greater treatment effects than when these methods are not used. Implementation of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s (ABM) Breastfeeding-Friendly Physician’s Office protocol has been shown to increase exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months after delivery.
