What are the indications for bariatric surgery in an obese patient? Evidence-based answer: Bariatric surgery can be considered in patients with body mass index (BMI) between 32 and 34 kg/m2 with severe diabetes (HbA1c >9%) despite 2 or more medications, BMI 35 to 39 kg/m2 with 1 or more comorbidities, or any patient with BMI >40 kg/m2. Special populations (age 12–18 or >65 years) may also be candidates for surgery based on comorbidities (SOR: C, consensus guidelines).
