Does dietary restriction of certain foods prior to age 1 reduce the incidence of allergies? Bottom line: The evidence available at this time does not support delaying introduction of developmentally appropriate solid foods containing egg, wheat, cow’s milk, or peanut beyond 6 months of age for the purpose of allergy prevention. Some studies have actually suggested the risk for allergic sensitization may be higher with delayed introduction beyond 6 months, but these studies should be interpreted with caution, because the studies either relied on parental recall of allergy instead of clinically confirmed food allergy or did not use food allergy as an outcome measure.
