What is the best pharmacologic therapy for dermatophyte skin infections? Bottom line: Topical allylamines (eg, terbinafine, naftifine) and topical azoles (eg, miconazole, clotrimazole) both effectively treat tinea infections of the skin; however, allylamines cure slightly more infections than azoles (SOR: A, systematic review of RCTs). Tea tree oil is not an effective treatment for tinea (SOR: B, systematic review of 2 inconsistent RCTs).
