What is the best way to prevent ulcers caused by NSAIDs? Evidence-Based Answer: In patients who must take NSAIDs, combining a COX2-inhibitor with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is the most effective way to prevent recurrent ulcer bleeding in high-risk patients. Additionally, testing for Helicobacter pylori infection and eradicating the infection if positive in patients requiring long-term NSAID therapy also prevents ulcers (SOR: A, meta-analyses of RCTs).
