First- or second-generation antihistamines: Which are more effective at controlling pruritus? Evidence-based answer : The answer is unclear. Both first- and second-generation antihistamines reduce pruritus from atopic disease more than placebo. Sedation tends to be more common with first-generation medications (SOR: B, individual RCTs).
