Is gabapentin effective in the treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal? Yes, gabapentin appears to have some effectiveness as a single agent for patients with mild to moderate AWS. Additionally, gabapentin can be an effective ugmentation agent in patients with severe or rotracted AWS. Gabapentin is not metabolized hepatically and does not have known abuse potential,1 which makes it a favorable agent in this patient.
