Are aldosterone antagonists effective for treating hypertension? Spironolactone reduced systolic blood pressure (SBP) by approximately 20 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by 7 mmHg compared with placebo, and SBP by approximately 5 mmHg when used as add-on therapy for drug-resistant hypertension (SOR: C, disease-oriented outcomes from a meta-analysis of crossover studies and 1 RCT). No studies have reported on patient-oriented outcomes.
