Are antioxidants effective in preventing macular degeneration? Antioxidant supplements or minerals, such as vitamin E and beta-carotene, do not prevent or delay the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Similarly, dietary intake of antioxidants does not appear to affect the development of AMD (SOR: B, meta-analysis of primarily cohort studies).
