What is the prognosis of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)? The incidence of PHN in patients aged ≥50 years who contract shingles is between 8% and 22%. Severe PHN pain typically resolves within 6 to 12 months. Increased initial pain severity and increasing age portend increased PHN severity (SOR: B, prospective cohort and retrospective observational studies).
