What are effective treatments for medication overuse headache? Abrupt withdrawal of the offending agent or prophylactic treatment with beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, anticonvulsants, or angiotensin II blockers are effective strategies in the management of medication overuse headaches (SOR: B, RCT and cohort trials, guidelines based on low-quality evidence). Prednisone does not appear to be an effective treatment (SOR: B, single RCT).
