Is vaginal misoprostol safe and effective in term PROM? Bottom line: Vaginal misoprostol appears safe and effective for induction of labor when used in patients with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) at term. Vaginal misoprostol is similar in efficacy to oxytocin in achieving vaginal delivery within 24 hours and avoiding cesarean section and instrumental delivery. Studies have been underpowered to detect differences in rates of chorioamnionitis, but no significant differences were noted in rates of other serious complications.
