Does long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy increase the risk of fractures?
Does long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy increase the risk of fractures? Evidence-Based Answer: It appears that any use of a PPI is associated with an increased risk of vertebral fractures (SOR: C, systematic review of case-control and cohort studies). It is unclear if long-term PPI use increases the risk of hip fractures (no SOR given because of conflicting results from a systematic review of observational studies and a large cohort study).
